The ACT has four required sections plus an optional essay. Here’s the structure, order, and timing so you know what to expect.
The Four Required Sections
English (grammar and rhetoric), Math, Reading (passages and questions), and Science (data and experiments). Each is multiple choice. Order: English, Math, Reading, Science.
| Section | Content | Pacing note |
|---|---|---|
| English | Grammar, usage, rhetoric | ~36 seconds per question |
| Math | Algebra, geometry, trig | ~1 minute per question |
| Reading | 4 passages, 10 questions each | ~8–9 min per passage |
| Science | Data, experiments, comparisons | ~5–6 min per passage |
Optional Writing
The ACT offers an optional Writing test. Some colleges require or recommend it; many don’t. Check your list before signing up.
